Bio-degradable overwrapping films - an update

t is now nearly a year since I wrote the “Overwrapping films come full circle” and nearly six months since the “Packaging and the Environment – the Role of Film Overwrapping" articles. The purpose of this article is to bring some of this information up to date and to outline some of the developments within biodegradable films and specifically their application to overwrapping. There are now three competing technologies for biodegradable overwrapping films. These are films made from polypropylene, films made from polylactic acid (corn starch) and finally films made from cellophane (wood pulp).

Can Marden Edwards machines use environmentally friendly BOPP film ?

For many years the standard for over wrapping film has been BOPP, or Biaxially Orientated PolyPropylene. BOPP is manufactured from an oil based polymer and so is not biodegradable. Cellophane used to be the material of choice for wrapping from 1912 (when cellophane was invented) onwards. Cellophane was made from cellulose, which is wood pulp, and this is inherently biodegradable. With the advent of a greater environmental consciousness, there is now a renewed interest in “green” and “environmentally friendly” wrapping materials and machines.

Collating and overwrapping reduces costs and increases quality

Overwrapping has always provided the most prestigious presentation style of wrapping for many individual retail consumer items. Boxes of chocolates, perfume cartons, packs of cigarettes, CDs and DVDs, and cartons of tea bags have always benefited from the high quality appearance that bundle wrapping, or bundling, provides. However, when it comes to overwrapping products for distribution purposes overwrapping has often lost out to shrink wrapping, cartoning and case packing. This is changing as overwrapping machines become faster and easier to change size and the cost benefits of overwrapping become more apparent. The other benefit is that the distribution pack produced simply looks better, too.

Over wrapping films come full circle

Over wrapping machines have long been referred to as cellophane wrappers, cello wrappers or simply box wrappers. The overwrap itself has been known as a cello wrap. This terminology has its roots in the 1950s when all wrapping was with the wood pulp derived product call cellophane. Cello derives from the word cellulose, which is the primary structural component of green plants. It was first used for confectionery wrapping in 1912. Cellophane is coated with a thin plastic coating to ensure it seals when used for wrapping. Being wood based the manufacturing process is expensive but importantly cellophane will biodegrade. Cellophane was the most common form of plastic film made until 1963, when it was overtaken by polyethylene.

Altogether the customer uses 13 different sizes of carton for the creams and lotions it produces, all of which are wrapped in groups of six for distribution. While grouping rectangular cartons into a uniform collation ready for wrapping is a simple task for the Marden Edwards BX 125 collator/overwrappers already supplied, the fith panel cartons require extra handling.

Marden Edwards has recently designed, manufactured and installed an automatic in line pack buffer storage system. The purpose of an in line buffer is to ensure that high line efficiencies are maintained if a downstream machine stops production. For example, if a wrapping machine requires a film reel change it will be stopped for 30 seconds to a minute whilst the new reel is loaded. Instead of switching off the upstream machine, the in line buffer absorbs the production until the film reel change is complete.
