t is now nearly a year since I wrote the “Overwrapping films come full circle†and nearly six months since the Packaging and the Environment the Role of Film Overwrapping” articles. The purpose of this article is to bring some of this information up to date and to outline some of the developments within biodegradable films and specifically their application to overwrapping. There are now three competing technologies for biodegradable overwrapping films. These are films made from polypropylene, films made from polylactic acid (corn starch) and finally films made from cellophane (wood pulp).

Wedgewood is a young family company which starting producing high quality nougat biscuit bars in the family kitchen eight years ago. Originally, the naked nougat bars were wrapped by hand but as the business became more successful and demand grew a fully automated system was required.
Marden Edwards has recently delivered a B125LH8 collator overwrapper to the Mexican production facility of a major skin care pharmaceutical manufacturer. The B125LH8 bundling machine takes a single stream of individual products, in this case cartons of medicated soap, and produces a six pack bundle.

The multi pack format was demanded by the end user, a world famous American retailer. The presentation of the collated product was crucial because of the requirements of minimizing shelf space used but at the same time providing as large a retail display face as possible.
For the tobacco industry, as with any other, one of the prime considerations is to how to save money without affecting quality. When it comes to packaging, any small amount saved on each pack, when multiplied by a year’s production, can have a very profound effect on the bottom line.

The Evo-Fold has been designed as an entry level, fully automatic overwrapping machine capable of speeds up to 45 packs per minute.
